About the Organisation
Niti Manthan is an initiative to motivate and inspire young students on various socio-legal themes and to guide them traverse the righteous path throughout the endeavour of their personal and professional lives. By having a direct interaction and by the exchange of views with experienced legal minds and researching, conceptualizing and correspondingly reporting according to the selected avenue given below.
Niti Manthan currently functions in the areas of legal blogs, internships, e-classes, Young Leaders for Legal Literacy Program, Research centres, certificate courses and lecture series.
About Summer School
After a successful Summer School last year, where Niti Manthan had 225 students from 26 law schools across India; and THEY undertook 11 research projects in the fields of the intersection of law and other facets of society including politics, sociology, policy, psychology and philosophy, in 2019, we decided to have a virtual summer school in 2020.
In April, 1st phase was organised where 110 students from 56 law colleges interned in 9 research projects including Mental Health of the prisoners in Police Custody, Impact of Media on Democratic trends, Legal Awareness and Medico-legal interventions.
As the first phase was well received by the students, the second phase was started in June 2020, where 170 students interned and did research on 15 research projects including Learning law through Indic parables, Climate change policy, Impact of virtual courts and behavioural change, Left-wing extremism, FDI policy and Labour law.
The third phase of e-internships will commence on 29th August 2020. This shall be a non-paid research experience, with an aim to facilitate students with quality access and research skills. The project leads, who are mostly practising advocates, psychologists and scholars have engaged themselves for the project on a pro-bono basis.
Research Areas in the third phase
Suicide assessment and prevention in Judicial Custody
The researchers would assess the suicide idea among prisoners, would collate the data of suicidal attempts by the prisoners and plan an intervention for suicide prevention. Students with experience in forensic psychology and/or criminal procedure will be preferred.
International Child Rights
The project would deal with the pertinent question of ‘Whether India should be a signatory to the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction.’
The problem needs a solution which balances international law, child’s welfare and rights of the parents. The researchers would be working on International Conventions, their application in other municipalities and a comparative analysis of Indian law.
Legal Literacy and Awareness
This program intends to empower the masses to demand justice and effective remedies. This project comprises of various activities intended to build public awareness in different sectors: doctrinal research and empirical work, including sessions with schools and other organizations would be undertaken. Some programs which are already going on under this project are: Young Leaders for Legal Literacy Program and Legal Literacy Collaboration Program.
Center for Eco-Legal Research
Under this center, the team would be working on environment centric laws and policy. In the last two months, the team has worked on climate change policy and has received guidance from Professors of Environment and Law Schools.
The interns shall, apart from research on environmental policy, shall also assist in setting up webinars, workshops and shall gain the relevant skillsets through the developmental programme that endeavours to equip the interns and the core team with the relevant know-how in policymaking in the realm of environmental law and policy.
Applications are welcome from a regular student of law, social work, public policy, environmental research, a relevant scientific background.
International Humanitarian Law
In this phase, research would include the existence, type and geographical scope of armed conflict qua the scientific and technological developments, warfare in the present times is not restricted to the traditional battlefield but has evolved into global battlefields where arms and ammunition have been replaced by soft weapons like computer software, viruses, biological weapons etc. The research will also focus on the constraints like military interoperability, territorial access, personal access, intelligence etc.
Eligibility
A regular student of law, psychology, sociology, political science, medicine or IT is eligible to apply. The learning affinity and a spirit for constructive research is a sine-qua-non.
